Okay, so get this:
We go into this lesson with a less-active family, and all is going well. Both parents are there, as well as both sons (one of which is a non-member) and we're making small talk ang getting along really well. All is good. The mom then tells us that she went to school during the Communist era and learned Russian in school. My companion goes: "Oh! I know a little Russian. The word for fish in Russian is riba." Except she doesn't say riba. She says another word. That is not Russian. It is Hungarian. It's a super big, super bad Hungarian curse word and she says it four times. Sooooo funny...afterwards. We played it off well and I may have been that insensitive person who died of laughter after #wereclose #itsfine
But, yeah, Nyíregyháza is still bombing and booming and I'm still in love. We had this crazy moment of miracle-ness this past week---super cool. We went to Miskolc for a zone training, which is awesome in and of itself, but after getting back to Nyíregyháza we realized a missionary's worst nightmare---I had lost the phone! We had weekly planning the next day and everybody's numbers were on it--I was tripping! So we thought maybe we lost it somewhere in the city instead of Miskolc so we went to retrace our steps and ended up at a park bench we'd been at earlier that day. So I walk up to the lady sitting there and say, "Have you seen a black Nokia phone here?" And she goes: "Are you an Elder?" And I'm like: "Uh..I'm a sister missionary." And she's like: "Oh, yeah, that's like an Elder." And so I ask: "Are you...are you a member?" Because I definitely have never met her before. And she says "I was baptized twenty-five years ago in Debrecen, but I haven't been back to church in years and years. Can we meet?" Uhm...I'm going to go with yes on that. We set up for the next day, and she's got some work ahead of her, but it was awesome.
As far as miracle part two, the phone was on the bus we'd taken from Miskolc and one of the ticket-checkers found and amazingly didn't steal it and got it back to us first thing the next morning. Boom. We had also enlisted a lady at a fagyi stand to help us in the "Great Search For The Nokia 2015" and when we came back and told her we found it the next day, she gave us free fagyi to celebrate. Score!
Nyíregyháza has been hopping. The work is great, and to add to our joy Coke is doing a publicity stunt where they have a free Coca Cola truck that gives out free Coke all day, which I don't totally understand, but willingly accept hahaha. Also, we got stress tested by Scientologists on the main square. It happens.
Anyways, we went paintballing for PDay today and it was awesome even though one of the Elders pelted me in the neck! Haha We're headed up to Budapest for interviews (our first in Hungarian!) with Szabadkai elnök and planning on ending the last full week of the mini with a bang! (By the way--transfers next week, I'll be emailing on Tuesday instead of Monday) I hit my year mark this past week and have enclosed a picture with me and the Hungarian statue that I found best encapsulates my feelings about this mission landmark---and I promise I didn't burn too much to celebrate ;)
I love you all and want to remind you that sometimes God leads you back to benches you've already been--, but sometimes we lose our phones to find our less actives. And remind us there are greater things in the works. (Also, occasionally there is ice cream at the end ;)
